  • On the death of John Irving in 1878 the Carlisle Patriot noted in a long obituary that Irving, a grocer of Longtown, who was twice mayor of the City of Carlisle, had 'filled a foremost place in the little circle of Carlisle affairs' and that 'he would be something of a cynic who yesterday heard unmoved that Mr John Irving had passed away.'
