Footnotes

  • This chair exhibits several rare features. These include: the piercing to the cresting rail, which is traditionally of solid form; the unusual geometric symbols to the cresting; the mask pointed finials; the carving to the rear uprights (above the arm joints) which are often simply moulded or even plain; the carving to the top and sides of the arms; the shaped arm ends, which are normally plain and simply rounded; and the carved front seat rail, again typical plain or channel moulded.

An armchair with a pierced arched carved cresting rail and pointed finials is in The Burrell Collection, Glasgow; illustrated Tobias Jellinek, Early British Chairs and Seats 1500 to 1700, p.66, pl.43.

A Charles II panel back armchair, attributed to South-West Yorkshire/East Lancashire, with a carved front seat rail following the design of the back, sold in these rooms, The Beedham Collection, 24 May 2012, lot 105.
