A late Regency painted armorial hatchment
Of lozenge form, painted on leather with the arms of Joshua SMITH (1732 - 1819), of Erlestoke, nr. Devizes, Wilts., and his wife Sarah nee GILBERT (daughter of Nathanial Gilbert), in a black-painted frame with gilt slip, overall 180cm wide x 180cm high

Footnotes

  • This hatchment was probably painted to commemorate the death of Joshua Smith, who died in 1819. Smith, born in 1732, was the son of John Smith, a merchant of Lambeth, and his wife Mary. In 1766, he married Sarah, the daughter of Nathanial Gilbert, a judge and member of the legislative council of Antigua. Smith was a shipowner and proprietor of East India stock. He was returned as MP for Devizes in 1788. Anne and Joshua had four daughters, the first Maria, married Charles, Lord Compton in 1787.
