boldly signed by Gar Wood, In 1932, American speed king Gar Wood - who was the first to go over 100mph and two miles a minute on water - and Kaye Don, the Irish Land Speed and water record breaker, met on the Detroit River in a "grudge match." Wood won easily. His boat, Miss America X, was called a "Madman's Dream" and was powered by four 1800hp, 12-cylinder Packard engines. They powered the boat to a speed of 124.915 mph - a respectable Gold Cup time today.
