1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Convertible Roadster with Hardtop
Chassis no. 121040 10 024468
The history of this model is covered in the description for lot 414
in this sale. In contrast to that earlier car, this is an 'as found' un-restored example. We understand that the 190 SL was originally delivered new to California and was maintained in Hollywood, CA for the first 25,000 miles of its life, as this is documented in the car's original service book.
As viewed today, the car has an exceptional and original rust-free body, save for the trunk floor which was replaced with a factory panel due to prior trunk seal leakage. The exterior was repainted many years ago, but all of the chrome and trim pieces appear intact and are in very good, restorable condition.
The interior is original and relatively well-preserved, with correct dash features including radio however, the seats and carpets will require attention. The engine has been recently run and shows excellent oil pressure and the gas tank has been removed and cleaned. Included with the car are new relined brake shoes for all four wheels.
The Mercedes comes with both soft frame and hard top, the latter being of the later design with the larger rear window, which makes for a lighter more airy cabin. Also present are the original owners' packet which contains an operators' handbook, parts manual, service book, radio instructions and other original documents.
Overall, this Mercedes-Benz example is an excellent candidate for a straightforward restoration, it being so much easier to restore original components than to find missing ones, as well as presenting an opportunity to preserve many original features of a survivor car.
