The successor to Jaguar's popular 3.4 saloon of 1957-58, the British automaker's compactly packaged Mark II saloon (sedan) arrived in late 1959. While retaining the earlier car's 107.4" wheelbase and its general form, the Mark II featured a new wrap-around backlight and revised side window details. At the front, a new vertical center bar split the already classic Jaguar grille design. Rear track was increased by 3.25 inches, enhancing both appearance and stability.

The 1962 Mk II, as presented here, was powered by a 220-hp DOHC 3.8L inline six of the type also used in that era's Jaguar XKE, albeit with dual SU carburetors in place of the tri-carbs used on the sports car model. With its excellent power-to-weight ratio, the Mark II was a genuine high-performance sports sedan. Testers recorded 0-60 mph times of 8.5 seconds and the top speed was near 125 mph. Little wonder, the Mark II 3.8 was soon known as "the business man's express."

All Mark II saloons were well appointed in the grand European touring tradition. The sumptuous interior of the offered car is trimmed in red leather and its wood instrument board and door trim well represent the traditional accouterments of fine British motorcars. There are even fold-down trays for the rear passengers. The U.S. port-of-entry price was around $4700—about the cost of a new Buick Electra at the time.

Numerous improvements helped the Mark II 3.8 dominate sedan racing both in Great Britain and on the Continent. Virtually every well-known British racing driver of the era scored victories in a Mark II 3.8. It wasn't until 1963 that an American Ford Galaxie, packing a 6.9L V8 built for racing, finally broke Jaguar's decade-long hold on the British Saloon Car Championship.

The 1962 Mark II Saloon offered here is a LHD model, equipped with the desirable four-speed overdrive manual transmission. After Gene Beardslee acquired the car at the auction of a Manhattan garage owner in 1969, the car was given to Hibernia Restoration for a complete mechanical rebuild of the engine, transmission, and brakes. A careful conservation job on the original red leather interior was also performed, bringing the Jaguar to like-new condition. Photographic documentation of this work is included with the lot. The paint and bright work were left as is and remain in fine order. A finely preserved original car, opening the hood reveals a beautifully presented, clean engine bay. The trunk is equally spotless and complete with factory tool kit. The car has been recently serviced to insure great performance and the carburetors have been freshly rebuilt.

Overall, this 1962 is a very appealing example of its type. Finished in a great color combination, the car is a desirable mix of originality and fresh mechanicals.
