A sizeable Egyptian anhydrite kohl jar Middle Kingdom, circa 1991-1797 B.C. With broad disc rim and shoulders, the body tapering towards the narrowed, slightly out-turned foot, 2¾in (6.8cm) high
Provenance: Sir Francis Sacheveral Darwin Collection (1786-1859), thence by descent.
Sir Francis Sacheveral Darwin, half uncle of Charles Darwin, travelled for two years from 1808 in the Mediterranean and East, and of his five travelling companions he was the only one to return alive. He kept a diary of the tour which shows antiquarian interests. After his travels he finally settled in Derbyshire where he continued to pursue his interests in archaeology and natural history.
