Two Acid Test Diplomas, one awarded to Jerry Garcia, the other to Mountain Girl
Both age toned, lightly foxed, tear to corner of Mountain Girl's diploma, chip to margin of Mountain Girl's diploma.
Each reading: "Be it known ... that This Person, Jerry Garcia, has fully earned this acid test diploma." Together with the same diploma for Mountain Girl.
Rock Scully remembers: "Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters returned to San Francisco for a final Acid Test on Halloween in 1966. The event was held in an old funky warehouse downtown. The diplomas were created by Paul Foster, a remarkable artist, madman and unique character who traveled with the Prankster crew and sometimes lived in the tree house at Kesey's in La Honda, California.
This event was at the end of a long and dangerous adventure. The Grateful Dead were expected to appear and were advertised to play, but at the last hour, they were lured away by Bill Graham to play at the Fillmore. As people left the Graduation, they were given a diploma. Paul sat at the door and filled them out for everyone. His handwritten calligraphy is distinctive and is his own invention. We rolled and tied them with ribbon and gave them out to all who were there. There were some left over and he made them out for the missing band and delivered them later.
Shortly after this, Mountain Girl and Jerry Garcia began their long relationship. She moved into the Grateful Dead's house at 710 Ashbury. These Acid Test diplomas were put up on the wall in their bedroom and in all their subsequent homes."
