A Jerry Garcia original airbrush painting, Alien Craft, 1985; together with a Jerry Garcia original, airbrush painting, Brain, 1985
Alien Craft and silk patterns, with chipping to left and margin, seen only in a few ties and silk patterns; Brain very slightly warped.
Alien Craft was one of Jerry's earliest airbrushed finished pieces. He was excited about the airbrush, the ease of use and the vivid smooth colors. He sat in a circle of paints and tools with the easel always close at hand. Amazing and bright, it is a typical Garcia sketch, too, unique, with playful and somewhat inscrutable design but, as always, appealing.
Jerry was just beginning to use the airbrush in 1985. He spent a lot of time practicing with it and completed a number of pieces. The airbrush was fast, crisp and exciting, with strong smooth color and no messy blobs of paint to deal with. He was having fun with it, and gave his paintings the same intense attention that he gave to learning new songs.
Brain demonstrates Jerry's versatility and humor. This is a careful, precise design. He worked hard practicing his new painting skills and Brain sometimes looks like it is laughing.
