Coconut Leaf Pounder, Wotje Atoll, Marshall Islands
height 9in (23cm)
with fine dark brown glossy patina.
Thomas Murray, California
Marc Franklin Collection
According to Murray, this type of pounder was used to break coconut leaves into the fine filaments using the edges. The flat edge was used to burnish the finished weaving, giving it the glossy finish. This tradition was over by the end of 19th century.
