In 1993, Herb Ritts travelled to east Africa to photograph its landscape, wildlife and the Masai people. His photographs of Africa marked a departure from the high-fashion, glossy, Hollywood images for which he was known, yet are nonetheless recognisably elegant and stylish with characteristically bold shapes, strong lines, tonal contrast and rich textural detail. Of his Africa portfolio, Ritts famously said, "I loved working with only what was in front of me, as it came along. It's a matter of composing with your eye what's going on in front of you, bringing what you've learned into the moment you're in" (from an interview by François Quintin, www.herbritts.com).
