Valentine 'Val' Prinsep was the son of Julia Margaret Cameron's sister, Sarah, and Henry Thoby Prinsep. Born in Calcutta in 1838, Valentine was an artist, tutored by lifelong friend George Frederick Watts, encouraged by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and much influenced by Frederick Leighton. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1862 until his death in 1904, becoming a royal academician in 1894. A striking figure, he married late in life but was said earlier to have had a love affair with Kate, youngest daughter of Charles Dickens, who was also an artist.

The Complete Photographs lists only one known example of this image, in the collection of the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire.
