  • Bicycle manufacturer Singer first ventured into the world of powered transport in 1901, making tricycles and motorcycles. Tri-cars soon followed, with motor car production proper commencing in 1905 using proprietary engines. The first Singer-powered model - the 10hp - debuted at The Cycle & Motor Cycle Show in November 1912. Because it weighed less than 7cwt and was under 1,100cc in capacity the 10hp Singer was classed as a cyclecar, hence the choice of venue. But unlike the majority of contemporary cyclecars, which were flimsy affairs of limited practicality, Singer's new baby was a proper light car and thus a development of immense significance. This policy of producing a high quality light car with a better-than-average specification was continued by the Junior. Introduced at the Motor Show in 1926, the 8hp Junior was powered by an 848cc, four-cylinder, overhead-camshaft engine. Immensely successful, the model was produced until 1932, undergoing a number of improvements for 1930 including a rear-mounted fuel tank, restyled radiator and four-speed gearbox in place of the earlier three-speed unit.
    The car offered here is one of the more desirable Junior variants, the Porlock Sports, which took its name from the eponymous Somerset hill. In December 1928 this formidable climb was tackled by a Junior Sports driven by two Singer agents, E Wood and E W Deeley, making 100 successful ascents and descents (press cutting on file). This particular Porlock was discovered in 2004 lying derelict in a barn by the preceding owner, Mr Keith Hill of Edwyn Ralph, Herefordshire, who completely restored it in 2005. Accompanying 'as found' photographs show that a surprising amount of the body, including the boat-shaped rear section, had survived. The Singer was acquired from Mrs J Poole of Lawford, Essex, whose husband Robert had bought it in 1937 and taken it off the road in 1947 following an accident. The current vendor acquired the Singer as a 'must have' for the Porlock museum in January 2009. This delightful Vintage-era sports car is offered with the aforementioned 'as found', restoration and period photographs; related literature and technical information; VSCC Eligibility Document; DVLA correspondence; SORN letter; a quantity of expired MoT certificates; Swansea V5C document; and MoT to July 2013.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalogue.
