1926 Douglas 348cc EW
Registration no. 7668 TU
Frame no. MF659
Engine no. YE693
Designed by Cyril Pullin and launched at the Olympia Show in 1925, the Douglas EW was intended to benefit from tax concessions available to lightweights and so weighed under 200lbs. In typical Douglas fashion the engine was a fore-and-aft flat twin: a fixed-head sidevalve with outside flywheel, hand and mechanical oil pumps, and BTH magneto ignition. A gearbox mounted behind rather than above the rear cylinder, all-chain drive and decent-sized drum brakes differentiated the EW from its predecessors, as did the handsome sloping fuel tank that replaced the 'flat' style used hitherto. An unusual feature was the gearchange gate located in the tank's centre. Acquired by the current vendor at Brooks' Beaulieu sale in July 1999 (Lot 212) having recently been restored, this EW has since formed part of his private museum collection, being routinely maintained by its enthusiast owner. The machine was exercised regularly on a private estate until around two years ago and the engine has been turned over frequently. The carburettor, fuel and oil pipes, and the tank interiors have all been cleaned recently ready for use. Apart from some minor blemishes, the Douglas is said to be in very good order and should require only light re-commissioning. Believed to retain its original registration number, the machine comes with the original tool kit in its leather pouch and duplicated copies of the 'Running Instructions' and 'Care & Maintenance Manual' together with various SORNs and Swansea V5/V5C documents.
