    Intended to extend Ferrari's appeal to a sector of the market already contested by rivals Aston Martin and Maserati, the 250GTE 2+2 debuted in the summer of 1960. Ferrari's first four-seater, the 250GTE 2+2 was directly descended from the most commercially successful Ferrari of its day, the 250GT. Launched in 1954, the latter featured a lighter and more-compact Colombo-designed 3.0-litre V12 in place of its Europa predecessor's Lampredi unit. The 250GT chassis followed Ferrari's established practice, being a multi-tubular frame tied together by oval main tubes, though the independent front suspension now employed coil springs instead of the transverse-leaf type. A four-speed, all-synchromesh gearbox transmitted power to the live rear axle, while hydraulic drums looked after braking all round. Disc brakes arrived late in 1959 and a four-speeds-plus-overdrive gearbox the following year, and both were features the 250GTE enjoyed from the start of production in 1960.
    Pininfarina's brief had been to produce a 2+2 without sacrificing the 250's elegant good looks or sporting demeanour and the master carrozzier succeeded brilliantly with the GTE. By moving the engine, gearbox and steering gear forward and the fuel tank back, sufficient room was created for two occasional rear seats within the 250GT's 2,600mm wheelbase. The Tipo 128E outside-plug engine's 240bhp ensured that there was no reduction in performance despite the inevitable gain in weight. A popular and highly profitable car for Ferrari, the 250GTE evolved through three series, changes being mainly confined to the dashboard layout and exterior lighting arrangements, remaining in production until 1963.
    This right-hand drive 250GTE was originally built in December 1961 for Mr John Gaul, a resident of Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, London W1. Mr Gaul specified a two-tone colour scheme, the roof being Azzuro and the main body Bleu Sera, with an unusual interior trimmed in similar bi-colour Connolly hide. The car was also fitted with a Blaupunkt Koln motorised self-seeking radio and an electrically raised antenna. All of these original features are retained, while the spare wheel appears unused and still has the original Pirelli Cinturato tyre fitted. The car is fitted with additional instruments on the glovebox fascia, these being a clock and an ammeter.
    It appears that Mr Gaul spent a lot of time on the Continent, the original green logbook (issued 1966) recording that the car previously carried the Italian registration 'EE 02084'. It also shows that the Ferrari was imported on 29th October 1963 at Dover, then re-imported again on 14th October 1964 and finally on 17th November 1965.
    It appears that the Ferrari was sold to Chipstead of Kensington, Holland Park Avenue, London W11 who on 11th March 1966 registered it as 'JYX 85D'. The car was then sold to Collier & Co Ltd, Birmingham on 1st March 1967, passing to Mr Joe Porter of Sedgley, Worcestershire on 13th November 1968. Mr Porter was a regular visitor to the present owner's engineering works and was continually harassed to sell the vehicle by the then young and enthusiastic vendor. Eventually Mr Porter agreed to sell and the Ferrari passed to the present owner on 17th July 1974. It is currently registered in the name of his company.
    Unfortunately, circumstances prevented the owner from giving his Ferrari the time he would have liked. He put the registration mark '63 JON' on the car and attended some of the early Ferrari Owners Club meetings. Around 1979 at an FOC meeting at Honnington Hall, the 250GTE was photographed with a view to featuring in a book and many years later it appeared in Roy Bacon's 'Motorcar Legends Ferrari' (page 38). Some years ago the registration was transferred and the present number is 'HON 641D'.
    Not used for many years, the Ferrari is presented in 'barn find' condition in need of total restoration and is sold strictly as viewed. The odometer reading is 50,840 miles. The car comes with the original black tool roll, the jack, some original tools and an original Italian-language handbook with hand written translations on every page. Accompanying documentation consists of the aforementioned green logbook, owner and Ferrari factory correspondence, and Swansea V5C document.
