Footnotes

  • Mario Confente (1945-1979); A graduate of the Leonardo da Vinci School of Engineering in Verona, Italy, and competition cyclist for the famous Dillettanti Bencini Team. Confente was well regarded by his team-mates as a man with an eye for perfection. He carried that passion for cycling and attention to detail with him when he moved to California where he built custom made bicycle frames for the Masi project and then under his own name. Regarded as "one of the finest frame builders that ever put torch to steel". While he was working alone Confente entered into correspondence with George Daniels about a frame that George Daniels wished to order. Photocopies of a letter and the build card are offered for sale with the lot, as well as a file of other correspondence about 'The first Confente in Britain' between George Daniels and another Confente frame owner. One letter dated 2003 lists the frame as the only Confente in Britain. Sadly Mario Confente died aged just 34, leaving a legacy of only 135 bicycle frames that bear his name and 'spade' symbol, this frame is one of those rare few.
