Launched in October 1961, the Jaguar Mark X was technically more advanced than preceding Jaguar saloons, featuring independent rear suspension similar to that of the E-Type sports car and the tried-and-tested XK 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine. Combining a comfortable ride with excellent handling, this new suspension system ingeniously used lower wishbones with the driveshafts functioning as the upper links. For a car weighing around two tons the 120mph Mk X was impressively quick and, like all Jaguar saloons, its interior was exceptionally well appointed and comfortable. The Mk X was being built with the torquier 4.2-litre engine, an all-synchromesh gearbox and Marles Varamatic power-assisted steering among numerous other improvements by the time the face-lifted 420G (for 'Grand') version arrived in October 1966. Apart from indicator repeater lights and a reshaped front end, presaging the looks of the yet-to-be-announced XJ6, there was little to differentiate the newcomer externally. Within the cabin there were improved seats and a revised dashboard that is surely one of the most attractive ever to grace a prestige automobile. These alterations would be among the last made to the 420G, which was dropped in June 1970, its place as the company's flagship saloon having been taken by the newly introduced XJ6. It is especially fitting that this 420G is offered for sale at the Royal Air Force Museum, as its French owner has been a pilot for some 45 years and during the military phase of his career flew many joint missions with the RAF. The vendor bought this automatic transmission model in 1990, around two years after it had been imported to France, and registered it with a regular Carte Grise. Over the last 22 years the car has been driven only some 10,000 kilometres while benefiting from considerable expenditure on refurbishment (see details on file). It has been used three times at the Le Mans Classic as circuit/hotel transport while the vendor was racing other cars (XK120, Riley and OSCA) and on one occasion was parked next to Rowan Atkinson's MkIX Jaguar at the private evening party at L'Abbaye de l'Épau. We are advised that the car is kept garaged, is well looked after and drives very well, only needing some adjustment to the front brakes as it pulls a little to the right under braking. The recorded mileage of circa 70,000 is believed correct. Offered without reserve.
