Footnotes

  • The car offered here is one of the last Silver Dawns built immediately prior to the introduction of the Silver Cloud. These later chassis incorporated the final developments including a higher compression engine, more efficient twin exhaust system and higher ratio (12/41) rear axle - all features of great benefit in today's higher speed motoring environment. 'JCX 748' has had only four recorded owners: two in the UK and two in the USA, from whence it recently returned. The car was first registered in February 1955 to Thomas Lumb & Co Ltd of Skipton, Yorkshire. The Lumbs were mill owners and the car was registered to Victoria Mill, Skipton. Their family home - 'Rockwood' - was a substantial property on the edge of town.
The car subsequently passed (briefly) through the hands of Rolls-Royce specialists, Moores of Brighton Ltd before once more heading north to Walter Greaves of Sheffield in 1966. In March 1975 the car was purchased from The Viceroy Carriage Company by Richard Werby and shipped to his home in the USA. At this time the recorded mileage was approximately 90,000. The car remained with Richard Werby for 26 years before being purchased in 2001, at 105,723 miles, by its fourth owner, Dr Stephen Davidson. The US history on file includes various invoices, raised during the last ten years of Dr Davidson's ownership, showing expenditure of $41,576. These records support the current odometer reading of 118,000 miles
Since its return home, the Rolls-Royce has been driven from storage on trade plates for circa ten miles. We are advised that it drives very well, maintaining good oil pressure and steady water temperature, while the automatic gearbox is said to be 'excellent'.
Representing an excellent opportunity to purchase a late Silver Dawn suitable for further improvement, the car is offered with its original buff logbook, copy chassis cards, C&E Form 386 showing import duties paid, and a substantial history file containing invoices detailing work done over many years. It is anticipated that the original registration number 'JCX 748' should be recoverable on application. A quantity of tools (large and small) is included in the sale and the car also comes with a radio (cassette fitted at present).
