Footnotes

  • AN EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD BRIDE-TO-BE CHOSES HER TRUSSEAU: the flyleaf of this charming book of designs bears the ownership inscription "Ellen Marie Burnett/ Haling Park/ February 25th 1830". It clearly relates to her forthcoming wedding, which the Gentleman's Magazine records as taking place between Ellen Maria, third daughter of Charles Fassett Burnett of Haling Park, Croydon, and Edward B. Meyer of Wilton Crescent, at St James's at St James's on 2 June 1831 (Volume CI, January to June 1831). Her father Charles Fassett Burnett (1779-1852) was a vinegar-maker and distiller of Vauxhall. Her mother was Harriet née Barons (1789-1830); Ellen Maria being born on 25 November 1811. Her mother died in May 1830, which may explain why the wedding did not take place till the following year. The designs in the book give some clue as to its origin. The first 110 or so are skilfully executed, employing ink wash, and occasionally feature Ellen Maria's name or initials; while the remaining designs are less assured and feature names of other girls. It seems fair to assume therefore that the original book was the work of a professional couturier and was presented to Ellen Maria when preparing her trousseau, while those at the end were added either by Ellen Maria herself or a member of her family (she had no less than six sisters).
