Footnotes

  • FROM THE LIBRARY OF ISAAC CASAUBON (1559-1614). "Casaubon's scholarship is distinctive. He was a philologist... The texts which he addressed were those which would provide as much information as possible about ancient Greek—and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Roman—civilization. He brought an exceptionally wide range of other texts to bear on them, and the notes he made as he read have begun to be valued as unusually full and interesting evidence for early modern practices of reading... They are extant in the margins of many of his printed books, of which the largest collection is in the British Library, and on a series of loose leaves... in the Bodleian Library" (ODNB).
