Two cartoons by Albert Heim, commissioned by Lieutenant General Theodor von Wundt, 51st (Württemburg) Reserve Infantry Brigade, one captioned "Wie ich meinen Irländer fing!", the other "Druten im unterstand do ists halt schön," featuring General von Wundt smoking and drinking with fellow Officers, gouache and ink on paper, one initialed A.H. in bottom right corner, each approximately 240 x 345mm., [c.1915]; together with an album of photographs compiled by and featuring the General, including scenes en route to Belgium, French prisoners of war, German trenches ("schutzengraben") on the front line, and the German artillery, 169 images, predominantly gelatin silver prints, manuscript captions on the mounts, mostly mounted four per page and back to back, images typically 45 x 65mm., small oblong folio (140 x 205mm.), 1915 (3)

Footnotes

  • Albert Heim was commissioned by von Wundt to record life behind the German front line. The cartoon entitled "Wie ich meinen Irlander fing!" ("How I caught my Irish man") depicts von Wundt at the head of a table with a map of the Dardanelles behind him. To his left is a standing figure who bears a striking resemblance to Winston Churchill. The cartoon is presumed refer to Churchill's involvement, whilst First Lord of the Admiralty, in the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign of 1915 which forced him from government. The other cartoon, "Drunten im unterstand do ists halt schön" ("In the dugout it's cosy") shows von Wundt with fellows Officer identified as Alber, Ruoff, Basil, Lach and Köhler.
