Footnotes

  • Lucien Jonas (1880-1947), 'Peintre militaire attaché au Musée de l'Armée' in Paris, was one of the most prolific and moving of Great War artists. He was mobilized in December 1914, and spent much of the War on the front lines, producing thousands of portraits, landscapes and military scenes in the form of drawings, oil paintings, charcoals and sketches of all types. The present set consists of volumes 1 (2 copies), 3 and 6-12 from the series of 13. Complete sets of the thirteen are almost unheard of, collections of more than a single volume at a time very rare.
