LAWRENCE (T.E.)
Autograph letter signed ("T E Lawrence"), to his friend and colleague in Arabia, Major Hubert Young, asking him to send by diplomatic bag six boxes of Pall Mall cigarettes by "Heaven knows by what maker", for Prince Feisal ("...F. Has not been able to get the tobacco he likes in Paris, and is nearly out of English ones. The Pall Mall are his favourites..."); with a postscript: "He expects to go off about Wednesday next: and is only delaying to meet Clemenceau on Sunday. H is pleased with life./ L."; docketed on verso by Young with a pencil note by Young, ordering the cigarettes from the manufacturers, Messrs Rothman & Co, seemingly subscribed from Hill & Co, of Bond Street [barbers] ("...Please supply and I will recover from Colonel Lawrence at once..."), one page, blindstamped with the royal arms of government service and with the engraved heading of the British Delegation, Paris, some creasing and dust-staining, 8vo, British Delegation, Paris Peace Conference, 17 April [1919]

Footnotes

  • LAWRENCE OF ARABIA ORDERS CIGARETTES FOR PRINCE FEISAL. He attended the Paris Peace Conference as Feisal's advisor, translating and composing speeches on his behalf, although to small avail as the Arab point of view was largely ignored. Lawrence himself greatly disliked smoking.
