Lot Details
Proof cover of the Official Souvenir Programme for the Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VIII, printed in black, red, blue and gold within a gold border, with black letterpress, inscribed in the border with (?) point sizes "25 26", bifolium with blank lower leaf, some light dust-staining and wear, plus extensive pencil drafts rubbed out (these seemingly unrelated) overleaf, but still in attractive and presentable if not fine condition, 4to, [Odhams Press for King George's Jubilee Trust, 1936]

  • A POSSIBLY UNIQUE SURVIVING PROOF FOR THE COVER OF EDWARD VIII'S OFFICIAL SOUVENIR CORONATION PROGRAMME. It appears that this cover was designed by (Charles) Ernest Wallcousins (1883-1976), a book illustrator who early in his career worked with the Carlton Illustrators group and helped design a poster for the London underground in 1925 (an example held by the London Transport Museum). A photograph included in the lot shows Wallcousins in later life posing with an armorial drawing and programmes in very similar style to the Edward VIII programme, including the Official Souvenir Programmes for the Coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth (1936), and for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (1952), as well as for the Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten (1947), and for the Wedding of Princess Margaret to Antony Armstrong Jones (1960). A copy of the George VI Coronation programme bound in red morocco by Zaehnsdorf and of the Elizabeth II Coronation programme in blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe are included in the lot, along with other commemorative items. The artist's widow informed the present owner when giving him this collection that the Edward VIII programme was unique. We have found record of no other, apart from a dummy showing headings of contents only in the National Library of Australia (WorldCat 221063516).
