Lot Details
CHURCHILL (WINSTON)
Typed letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), to his Swedish publisher Bertil Sterner: "I am indeed obliged to you for sending me the beautifully bound and printed editions of the last three volumes of my History of the English-Speaking Peoples. I am glad to add these to my library. Pray accept my thanks and my good wishes..."), one page, headed paper, filing-holes, 4to, Hyde Park Gate, 26 November 1959; together with two Churchill cigars, the first banded 'Churchill Corona/ E. Nobel', cellophane intact and in Nobel cardboard case (130 x 15 mm.), the second banded 'La Corone de Cuba' (160 x 20 mm.), with cellophane opened at one end; and four letters to Sterner, two from Clementine Churchill and two from another of Sterner's authors, Dennis Wheatley

Footnotes

  • Also included are memoranda by Sterner describing two meetings with Churchill in May 1946, and September 1954, when these cigars were given to him. The first of these meetings was at the still bomb-damaged House of Commons in May 1946: 'Churchill showed me into his office and offered me a cigar out of his breast pocket. As I was rather hoarse I had to refuse to smoke'; the second was in September 1954, at Chartwell: 'As I very seldom smoke, I declined the cigarette that Lady Churchill offered me. When we were having coffee, Churchill insisted that I should take a cigar and I indeed took a thick and long one which I asked to be allowed to put into my pocket. But Churchill also selected a light, thick but short cigar out of the case that the butler held, removed the cellophane cover and gave it to me and I had to smoke this cigar. It was really very light and tasty. Churchill himself chose a thick and long cigar which he smoked with repeated lightings'.
