Lot Details
CHURCHILL (WINSTON)
The World Crisis, 5 vol. in 6, FIRST EDITIONS, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR in volume one and INITIALLED by him in the remaining volumes, maps and plates (some folding), occasional spotting, volume 6 without front free endpaper, bookplates of Roger Moreton Frewen, publisher's cloth, rubbed, spine of volume 2 torn at head [Woods A31(a)], 8vo, Thornton Butterworth, 1923-1931

Footnotes

  • It is not known for whom the books were signed, but they bear the bookplates of Roger Moreton Frewen (1914-1972), nephew of the sculptor Clare Frewen Sheridan, who was a cousin of Winston Churchill. Clare Sheridan went on to cast one of the best known bronze busts of Churchill, although her support for the October Revolution had caused them to break ranks politically in the 1920s. In the last volume, Churchill has initialled the half-title rather than the front free endpaper, indicating that it had already been torn out.
