  • The numbers on the verso correspond with the list of sitters listed in the prospectus and include: W.B. Yeats (illustrated); Arnold Bennett; H.G. Wells; G. K. Chesterton; John Masefield; John S. Sargent; Roger Fry; Robert Bridges; George Meredith; Edward Carpenter, and George Bernard Shaw. In the prospectus, as in Men of Mark, Coburn states: "I feel I have done a very worthy work in handing down to future generations in the permanent process of photogravure the portraits of a group of eminent men of my own time...I have studied my men and their works with enthusiasm, and in each instance I have tried to catch and record the illusive something that differentiates a man of talent from his fellows."
