Footnotes

  • A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, BOUND FOR THE DEDICATEE. Palingenus, also known as Pietro Angelo Manzolli or Manzoli, first published his astrological poem, Zodiacus Vitae, in around 1551. Written in 12 parts, one for each of the signs of the zodiac, it was suppressed by the Inquisition, who were eventually to disinter the author's body for burning. The first French edition was published in The Hague in 1731; it was also translated by Monnerie and dedicated to Chesterfield, the latter having been ambassador to the city during the years 1728-1732 (see inserted visiting card).
