Footnotes

  • Little seems to be known about the life of Odoardo Barri (1844-1920), who was apparently born Edward Slater in Dublin though he himself claimed to have been born in Como (and to have fought at Solferino). He became known as a singer of oratorios in Italy and Spain, and was for a time a tenor soloist at the Vatican. In 1859 he settled in London, where he headed the Odoardo Barri School of Voice Culture for over fifty years, and composed songs, masses and operettas.
