Lot Details
MUG-HOUSES
A Modest Defence of the Mug-Houses. With Some Account of the Usefulness and Necessity of Them. And a Fair Proposal for Laying Them Down, 24 pages, title within 2-line rule border, woodcut ornament on final leaf, title soiled, with note of purchase in upper blank margin and library stamp on verso, modern cloth, worn, 8vo, John Baker, 1717

Footnotes

  • SCARCE, NO COPY RECORDED ON ESTC OR COPAC. Published in response to a pamphlet by Sir Humphrey Mackworth entitled Down with the Mug: or, Reasons for Suppressing the Mug-houses (J. Morphew, 1717). John Baker is, together with T. Warner, recorded as having issued A Collection of State Songs... that have been publish'd since the rebellion: and sung in the several mug-houses in the cities of London and Westminster... in 1716, and it seems probable that it is the controversial issue of Jacobitism at this period that resulted in A Modest Defence... being so rare.
