Footnotes

  • SCARCE, NO COPY RECORDED ON ESTC OR COPAC. Published in response to a pamphlet by Sir Humphrey Mackworth entitled Down with the Mug: or, Reasons for Suppressing the Mug-houses (J. Morphew, 1717). John Baker is, together with T. Warner, recorded as having issued A Collection of State Songs... that have been publish'd since the rebellion: and sung in the several mug-houses in the cities of London and Westminster... in 1716, and it seems probable that it is the controversial issue of Jacobitism at this period that resulted in A Modest Defence... being so rare.
