Footnotes

  • EARLS OF MANCHESTER FAMILY COPY, IN A CONTEMPORARY VELVET BINDING WITH FINE SILVER FITTINGS. The medallions are die-cast rather than etched, and possibly from the school of the noted Dutch engraver Simon van de Passe (c.1595-1644), who worked in London and subsequently Denmark, producing medals and gambling counters (opinion is still divided as to the technique that was used by him). Montagu's work had first been published two years earlier as Contemplatio mortis, et immortalitatis, anonymously but with a dedication by Edward Benlowes to the author.
