Footnotes

  • The Potter brothers were born in Nagasaki, and Frederick seems to have been in an engineering business at Shanghai, which among other things built oil storage tanks. Typical of the contents are images showing play in Yokohama v. Shanghai at Kobe 1900 (by H.E. Bottlewalla) and Hong Kong v. Shanghai 1902; England v. Scotland 1902 (Scottish team group, captained by Frederick Potter); many groups at the Hong Kong Cricket Club; New Cricket Pavilion Shanghai; Shanghai v. Fleet at Wei-hei-wei 1911 (team group). In addition Frederick Potter was a keen steeplechaser and member of Shanghai Paper Hunt Club, represented by many images. Other subjects include Mounted Infantry for South Africa, military service in the Sudan, a visit to Monterrey in California, the isle of Gigha, the Oakley Hunt and Devon & Somerset Staghounds (both 1909), the 1905 floods and riots in Shanghai.
