  • JOHN FLAXMAN'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, WITH FINE STRONG IMPRESSIONS OF THE PLATES AND GOOD MARGINS. Hancarville's work was the result of being asked to catalogue the extensive collection of ancient vases, coins, bronzes, glass and terracotta formed by Sir William Hamilton, and sold in 1772 to the British Museum. According to Blackmer, Hancarville published 500 copies of this "edition splendide et de grand luxe" (Cohen-De Ricci), the fine plates being the work of C. Pignatari, C. Nolli, A. Cardo and A. Lamberti after Giuseppe Bracci, Edmondo Beaulieu, Pio. Bat. Tierce and others. The depictions of vases were a significant influence on Josiah Wedgewood, and indeed the likes of John Flaxman.
