FRANCE and ITALY DURING NAPOLEON'S FIRST EXILE
Series of 24 autograph letters by J.J. Blackburne to his father John Blackburne, MP, of Warrington, written while travelling in France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Brussels between 1814 and 1816, comprising ten letters written when travelling from Abbeville to Sécheron via Paris and Lyons, between 19 July and 5 September 1814, half of these being from Paris ("...We yesterday went to Versailles & were much delighted with its splendor & the great & little Trianon the residence of the unfortunate Marie Antoinette 2400 workmen are now refitting the whole of Versailles which they expect to finish in six months which I sh'd think impossible as every room in the Palace has been gutted We din'd at the Inn with a very pleasant Party Capt Digby & Lady Andover Ld P Beresford three sisters & Admiral Beresford & return'd to Paris in the cool of the Evening St Louis's Day is on the 25th of August the Parisians give a grand Fête..."), with three from Sécheron, near Geneva ("...Kings Joseph & Louis Napoleons are expected tomorrow on a visit to their Sister... The Empress Marie Louisa is just arrived for three or four days with several carriages full of attendants... I have only seen her figure as she was dressed in a large bonnet, but understand that tomorrow she will walk in the Garden..."); four letters from Milan, Florence and Rome between 22 October and 8 December 1814; four letters from King Joachim's Naples between 26 January and 1 April 1815; four from Palermo between 17 April and 10 June 1815; the penultimate letter from Brussels on 11 August 1815 ("...We pass'd over the field of battle near Waterloo which was most interesting. Brussells still contains many wounded/ just after the action there were above 30,000 in the town of all descriptions & nations What a Scene! Hundreds died for want of purpose..."); the final letter from Stuttgart on 28 July 1816, some 80 pages, address panels, postmarks, etc., 4to, Paris and elsewhere, 1814-1816
