Footnotes

  • FIRST EDITION OF THE BEST KNOWN WORK ON HAWKING OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY, adapted from the works of Giorgi, Carcano, Tardif and Artelouche by George Turberville, who was an intimate friend of Spenser. The two full-page woodcuts depict Queen Elizabeth out hawking - for the second edition of 1611 these were altered to show James I in Elizabeth's place.

Only four copies of the first ediion are recorded on ABPC as having sold at auction since 1975. Of these, three copies were bound with its usual companion, the anonymous Noble Art of Venerie, and the fourth was similarly defective to the present copy. The missing leaves are as follows: initial blank, title-page (supplied in manuscript, with the woodcut cut down and mounted), A1-4 ('Epistle Dedicatorie' etc.), and the 2 leaf 'Epilogue' (B3-4 in the Schwerdt copy, final 2 leaves according to ESTC).
