Footnotes

  • FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF ELIOT'S SECOND BOOK OF POETRY. Some 250 copies were hand-printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf at the Hogarth Press, following a visit by Eliot to Hogarth House in November 1918 to show them some of the poems. Copies were bound up in wrappers designed by Roger Fry and Gallup states that these were of varying texture and design, the earliest copies with a red printed label. This copy, from the Library of Henry Graham Dakyns, has a black printed label, and the texture of the untrimmed wrappers is that of wallpaper.
