Footnotes

  • Wilde lodged with the artist Frank Miles at the Godwin-designed Keats House (44 Tite Street) from late 1880 until early 1881. No letter to Mrs Sickert is recorded in The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde. She appears to have been the painter's mother, and was to have the distinction of remaining loyal when he was shunned by the ex-pat community – Walter among them – in Dieppe after his disgrace. In earlier and happier days, her daughter Helena had been a great favourite, Wilde addressing several notes to her as 'Miss Nellie'.
