WAUGH (EVELYN)
Photographic portrait of Waugh by Carl Van Vetchten, of 101 Central Park West, New York, gelatin silver print, showing Waugh standing against swagged curtains, blind-stamped by the photographer on the recto with his copyright notice and address on the verso, framed and glazed, size of image 230 x 170mm., overall size 400 x 320mm., dated on the back, New York, 15 December 1848

Footnotes

  • Patrick Leigh Fermor described Waugh in one of his letters to the Duchess of Devonshire: '...He has the most peculiar expression of mouth, eye-socket and nostril, as though they were all recoiling from his own aroma, which would be a blend of tweed, claret, cigar smoke and incense.' The image of Waugh in Saul Mauriber, Portraits: The Photographs of Carl Van Vechten, 1978, clearly taken on the same occasion as the present one, and in which Waugh is wearing his chequered coat, is incorrectly dated 1940 there – Waugh did not visit America that year.
