Footnotes

  • A magnificent record of the the largest civil engineering undertaking in late Victorian England. Work on the Manchester Ship Canal began towards the end of 1887, and it was finally opened by Queen Victoria, in 1894. New mechanical devices and construction methods were employed, together with approximately 16,000 navvies. This copy evidently belonged to the photographer G. Herbert Bayley.
