Footnotes

  • 'Significant as the first edition of one of Lawrence's important minor works' (Nash and Flavell). The essay was written in 1925 for publication in a journal, and first issued in this edition by Viscount Carlow, who noted in one of his copies that 'This book was printed to cover the copyright of certain documents that were stolen. No copies are in general circulation'. Nash and Flavell also state that thirty-two copies were printed and mostly given away to Carlow's friends, and that six of the copies are in institutional collections. The poet James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915) was author of The Golden Journey to Samarkand and Hassan and British Vice-Consul in Beirut, where Lawrence met and befriended him in pre-War years. They shared common interests in the East, antiquity, languages and literature.
