Depature for the Crusades, a saintly Queen blessing a lance from a mailed Knight, Ladies and Knights in attendance, castle background, illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum, decorative border, considerable flaking in the brownish sky not seriously affecting the image, framed and glazed (unexamined out of frame), pasted to back a phostostat of the recto, showing the fifteenth century choirbook on which the miniature was painted [Voelkle L143], c.220 x 160mm., [France, c.1900]

  • A number of similar scenes, some betrothals, appear in the forger's oeuvre. In this case the pennant on the lance has a coat of arms (rouge, a cross potent or, between four of the same) which may allow an identification of the couple.
