  • MACPHERSON IN FAVOUR OF A SAMUEL JOHNSTON. The author-translator of Ossian was at this time serving as an MP and agent to his kinsman John Macpherson, afterwards Governor-General of Bengal. Lord Macartney had just been appointed Governor of Madras, and was to sail for India on 21st February. The Samuel Johnston recommended in the letter was, as per Macpherson's request, employed by the East India Company in Madras between 1780 and 1795, where he was responsible for advancing loans to the Nawab of Arcot, who had employed John Macpherson as his London agent (see India Office Select Material, BL MSS Eur C242).
