Lot Details
BYRON (GEORGE GORDON, Lord)
A fine collection of letters and proofs concerning the Schultess-Young forged Byron letters, comprising nine galley proofs from Wise's Bibliography of Byron with about 20 pages of Wise's manuscript text, largely unpublished, 11 letters from Sir John Murray, 2 letters and a postcard from Maurice Buxton Forman, and some other material, together in a specially made cloth case, leather label, with a description [by John Carter, c.1950] on Scribners paper, 1931-1933

Footnotes

  • The letters were nearly published by Richard Bentley in 1872, but he pulped all but a handful of copies of the projected edition. Wise acquired one of these from Buxton Forman and was tempted by the highly coloured content to describe them as genuine (see Partington, pp.256-59). Lot 57 in the Pariser sale was another group of Wise Byron proofs, but less extensive and less interesting; both groups probably stem from J.A. Symington.
