WISE (THOMAS JAMES)
Four autograph letters signed ("Thos J. Wise"), to Arthur Swann, the first three describing how he acquired a rare Shelley pamphlet, privately from Sotheby's, for £900 ("...One thing I must MOST EMPHATICALLY beg of you, that is that you do not mention the price I paid for the pamphlet. The gentleman who owned it begged me not to allow the price to get abroad, & I gave him my promise to 'keep it from the press'. He had a most excellent reason for doing so... He was under no delusion regarding its value, & he knew that if the pamphlet went into Auction it would almost certainly have brought £1500., or perhaps a good deal more. But he forbade Sothebys to include it in a sale unless I had declined it, saying he would far rather it went to me... We are now good friends, & I would not hurt his feelings at any price..."); in the last letter, thanking him for a Dryden's essays and describing his parlous health ("...my nerves remain in a shocking state... I write with difficulty, & when I walk I do so with a stick in one hand, & holding the nurse's arm with the other..."), 14 pages, on headed paper, 8vo, Heath Drive, 29 October, 27 November and 4 December 1931 and 27 October 1932
