The remaining bookplates from the collection of the late Arthur W. Dorling, together with his reference library and bookplate-related correspondence: the bookplates totalling some 3,000 in number and with examples of all styles from Early Armorial and Jacobean to modern artists' samples, including an album of erotic bookplates (32 including Mark Severin's by John Buckland Wright, 8 plates by Mark Severin and 3 by Anatolii Kalashnikov), 2 alphabeticised sequences of plates (one sequence of some 800 in 4 small plastic boxes, the other sequence in an expanding file), and several boxes of miscellaneous, unsorted and duplicate plates; with correspondence, research notes, reference books, related periodicals etc. (large quantity)

  • The reference library contains some sixty books and pamphlets on bookplates, heraldry and collecting etc., including: Catalogue of British and American Book Plates Bequeathed... by A.W. Franks (3 vol., 1903-1904), Walter Hammond, Dated Book-plates (1895), Catalogue of the Well-known, Extensive and Valuable Collection of Book-plates of the Late Julian Marshall (Sotheby, 1906), and others by Brian North Lee, Egerton Castle, and Norna Labouchere, together with issues of the Bookplate Journal and Bookplate Society Newsletter.

    Also included in the lot is Dorling's bookplate demonstration aid, with 18 examples mounted on a long sheet of folded brown paper, showing bookplate styles from Early Armorial (plate dated 1702) through to the present day.
