MANUSCRIPTS – SEALS
Collection of vellum documents bearing the Great Seal of England, comprising: Elizabeth I, a Licence of Alienation from Edward Partridge to Francis Agard, for lands in King's Bromley, bearing a partly intact impression in white wax of the first Great Seal of Elizabeth I, suspended on a vellum tag, the figure of the monarch on both sides intact, some spotting, 15 December 1573; Elizabeth I, a Special Livery granted to William Compton, son and heir of Walter Compton, deceased, with a largely intact impression of the second Great Seal of Elizabeth in brown wax suspended by a vellum tag, seal lacking lower quarter, some spotting, 10 June 1586; Charles I, a Pardon of Alienation for William Browne for Sir Henry Agard of lands in King's Bromley, bearing a good, intact impression of the Great Seal of Charles I, 11 May 1632; Charles II, Inspeximus granted to a Dispensation by the Archbishop of Canterbury issued to Samuel Wotton, DD, Rector of West Wretham, with a good intact impression of the Great Seal of Charles II tying both documents, 6 May 1660; an Oath of Allegiance signed as witness by Gilbert Sheldon, Bishop of London, 1662; and a file of paper documents relating to a legal dispute between Pierre Duguay (1698-?1756) and parties in Paris (ex. Phillipps collection, Sotheby's, 7 December 1982, part of lot 22)

  • The Archbishop of Canterbury's Dispensation attached to the Inspeximus of Charles II is counter-signed by Sir John Birkenhead who had been man of business for Archbishop Laud. Not only was he a poet of some note, but he had shown himself during the Civil War to be a propagandist of near genius.
