Footnotes

  • EXTREMELY RARE: ONE OF 48 COPIES PRINTED BY STAFF HQ AND MARKET "SECRET". The premier source material for the ground campaign in Europe, the work was compiled by Second Army Headquarters Staff on the instruction of Lieut-General Sir Miles Dempsey, just after the end of the war whilst memories were fresh, "the staff officers were available, and the orders, instructions and other documents readily accessible" (Foreword). Copac lists only the Imperial War Museum copy (no. 37) referred to below; others are located at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, whilst the National Archives and Wellcome Institute have only volumes one and two respectively (the latter containing details of Belsen and casualty statistics).

PROVENANCE: SIR MILES DEMPSEY, and thence by descent. "Dempsey is almost unknown to the general public... Yet his part in Britain's contribution to that campaign was second only to Montgomery's in importance" (Peter Rostron, Monty's Army Commander. The Military Life and Times of General Sir Miles Dempsey, 2010). Sir Miles (1896–1969), was Commander of the British Second Army, the largest British army in history, during the D-Day landings in the Second World War. He was knighted on the field of battle by King George V1 in October 1944, and six years later he became shadow Commander in Chief Home Forces, a position that would have been activated in the event of war. When he died in 1969, he left instructions in his will that his diaries be destroyed, which contributed to the fact that little was written about him prior to the publication of Peter Rostron's biography.

Included in the lot is a framed letter dated 20 January 1953, from the Director General of the Imperial War Museum, Admiral of the Fleet Lord Cunningham of Hyndhope, to General Dempsey, thanking him for presenting a set of the books to his Librarian: "I know that he has been hoping to obtain a copy of this book for a very long time on account of its importance as a contemporary source for the history of the Second World War but that his efforts had previously been in vain on account of security regulations... It is indeed kind of you to have spared us one of the very few copies that were printed".
