LAWRENCE (T.E.)
The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, ONE OF 170 COMPLETE COPIES, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY TO EDWARD ELIOT, inscribed on fly-leaf "E.G. Eliot from T.E. 'Lawrence' with apologies for the troubles it is going to bring him. 30.xi.26", also inscribed "Complete copy. i.xii.26 TES" on list of illustrations, and with 'Roberts' crossed through and replaced with 'K[ennington]', printed in red and black, portrait of Feisal by Augustus John, 4 folding colour maps and 61 plates (many colour or tinted, 2 double-page), by Eric Kennington, William Roberts, Augustus John, William Nicholson, Paul Nash and others, illustrations in the text by Roberts, Nash, Kennington, Blair-Hughes-Stanton, Gerturde Hermes and others, illustrated endpapers by Kennington, original terracotta morocco, gilt-lettered spine in six compartments with raised bands, t.e.g., extremities rubbed [Clements p.49, stating that "only about 100 copies were produced at 30 guineas each"; O'Brien A040], 4to (252 x 190mm.), Privately Printed, 1926

Footnotes

  • ONE OF VERY FEW PRESENTATION COPIES OF THE PRIVATELY PRINTED EDITION, INSCRIBED BY LAWRENCE TO HIS LAWYER EDWARD ELIOT, joint trustee of the Revolt in the Desert charitable trust, warning him of potential legal problems to come. Lawrence of course was to become no stranger to wrangles over copyright and publication of this and other works.

Loosely inserted are the four-page Some Notes on the Writing of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Shaw, and three sheets of page proofs for the 1922 Oxford edition, within a wrap-around band inscribed in pencil "33" and "(29)". As is often the case, the 'Prickly Pear' plate is present here, but not the two Paul Nash illustrations on pages 92 and 208, nor the Blair-Hughes-Stanton wood-engraving that in some copies illustrated the dedicatory poem. Page XV is mis-paginated as VIII.

Provenance: presented by the author to The Hon Edward Eliot on 30 November 1926; inherited by his son Peter Charles Eliot in 1950, who presented it to the current owner in 1954.
