SMALL (JOHN) Untitled map of the counties of York, Cumberland & Lincoln, with a long and dated dedication to Sir Francis Bernard, manuscript map on paper in 4 sheets, scale one inch to five miles, executed in red and black inks and embellished with outline colour, some tears, size if joined 765 x 985mm., Scarborough, 10 April, 1761

  • An important map extending from Portsmouth and the Piscataqua River east to the Penobscot River and just short of Mount Desert Island "Full of Islands not Reconoiterd". Inland the course of the Kennebec River is traced to an unnamed lake: "From this Pond is suppos'd to be a Short Carrying-place into Penobscott River". The coastline of York and Cumberland counties is carefully divided in red and named to show settlements and plantations, those on the coast including Kittery, Arundell, Biddeford, Scarborough, Falmouth and George Town. Behind them are New Boston, New Marblehead (now Windham), New Glocester and Pearson Town (now Standish) overlooking Sebago Pond.
