BOYDELL (JOHN and JOSIAH) and JOHN WILLIAM EDY
Boydell's Picturesque Scenery of Norway; with the Principle Towns from the Naze, by the Route of Christiania, to the Magnificent Pass of the Swinesund... with remarks and observations... by William Tooke, half-title and index to the plates, 80 aquatint plates printed in two tints (brown and dark green), the last plate with slight spotting, contemporary half morocco [Abbey Travel 254; Tooley 103], folio (397 x 255mm.), Hurst, Robinson, 1820

Footnotes

  • "The most important English colour plate book on Norway" (Tooley). Edy went to Norway in the summer of 1800 with William Fearnside, travelling from Oslo to Trondheim, Morebjene and Bergen, recording the scenery in words and picture as they went. The work was first published in 8 parts between 1811 and 1820, and in a two volume edition, but the printing history as discussed by Abbey is very complex. The present copy of the single-volume edition has a title watermarked 1824 and all plates without imprints (as the Abbey copy).
